“SHE TRIED TO TAKE YOUR SON!”… BUT ALEJANDRO RECOGNIZED THE BRACELET ON THE FLOOR AND STOPPED LOOKING AT ELENA

PART 1: THE BRACELET OF A DEAD WOMAN

“She tried to take your son!”

Victoria’s voice echoed through the foyer.

Alejandro had just entered the mansion when he saw Elena sitting on the marble floor.

There was a small cut on her cheek.

Her lower lip was bleeding.

And she was holding little Mateo tightly against her chest.

The baby was crying desperately.

“Elena!”

Alejandro ran toward them.

“Tell me that isn’t true.”

Elena shook her head.

“I wasn’t trying to take him.”

Victoria appeared behind her.

Her white dress was perfectly in place.

So was her hair.

Too perfectly.

“I found her near the exit with the baby in her arms.”

Elena looked at her.

“That’s a lie.”

“A lie?”

Victoria pointed at Elena’s bag.

“She had his things packed.”

Alejandro looked at the open bag.

Clothes.

Documents.

A bottle.

Diapers.

It looked exactly like what Victoria had described.

Elena struggled to breathe.

“Alejandro, listen to me.”

“I’m listening.”

“Then ask her who shut off the cameras.”

Silence fell instantly.

Alejandro slowly turned toward Victoria.

She took one second too long to answer.

“I don’t know what she’s talking about.”

“The cameras stopped recording twenty minutes ago,” Elena said.

Victoria gave a nervous laugh.

“And I suppose you’re going to say I did that too.”

Elena didn’t answer.

She only looked toward the staircase.

Alejandro followed her gaze.

“Victoria… what happened upstairs?”

“Nothing.”

But Victoria looked toward the second floor again.

Alejandro saw it.

He walked to the bottom of the staircase.

Then something glinted on the marble.

He bent down.

He picked up a gold bracelet.

It was broken.

Alejandro went completely still.

“This shouldn’t be here.”

Victoria turned pale.

Elena closed her eyes.

Alejandro knew that bracelet.

He had bought it five years earlier.

For Isabel.

His wife.

Mateo’s mother.

The woman who had died twelve months earlier after falling down that very staircase.

“Where did you find this?”

Victoria swallowed.

“I’ve never seen it before.”

Alejandro looked up.

“Liar.”

Isabel had worn that bracelet almost every day.

After her death, Alejandro had asked about it.

Victoria had been the one who answered.

“She must have lost it during the accident.”

Victoria had been Isabel’s best friend.

She had been at the mansion that night.

She was also the last person to see Isabel alive.

“Alejandro, you’re not thinking clearly.”

He closed his hand around the bracelet.

“I’m thinking perfectly clearly.”

He looked at Elena.

“Tell me what happened.”

Elena began to cry.

“I found Victoria upstairs.”

Victoria interrupted her.

“Don’t believe her!”

“Shut up.”

It was the first time Alejandro had ever spoken to her that way.

Victoria stepped backward.

Elena continued.

She had taken Mateo upstairs for his nap.

When she left the room, she saw Victoria entering Isabel’s old bedroom.

The room had been locked for almost a year.

Alejandro had never found the strength to clear it out.

“What was she doing in there?”

“Looking for something.”

Elena followed her.

And found Victoria opening a box hidden inside the closet.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

And a small memory card.

“When she saw me, she tried to take it from me.”

Alejandro looked at Elena’s injury.

“Did she do this to you?”

Elena lowered her eyes.

“We struggled.”

Victoria shook her head.

“She’s making it up!”

But Elena said something that made Alejandro stop breathing.

“The card said, ‘Baby Camera, October 14.’”

October 14.

The night Isabel died.

PART 2: THE NIGHT ISABEL FELL

For an entire year, Alejandro had believed the same story.

Isabel had gone upstairs to get something.

She tripped.

She fell down the stairs.

Victoria was the one who found her body.

There was no footage because the security system had stopped working that night.

An electrical failure.

That was what the report said.

A terrible accident.

Nothing more.

But now Elena had found a memory card.

Hidden inside Isabel’s bedroom.

“Where is it?”

Elena pointed to her uniform.

She pulled out a small card.

Victoria rushed toward her.

“No!”

Alejandro stepped between them.

That reaction said more than any confession could have.

“What’s on this?”

Victoria began to cry.

“Alejandro, please.”

“What’s on this?”

“It’s not what you think.”

Alejandro inserted the card into the computer in his office.

Mateo was still crying.

Elena held him away from the screen.

Several files appeared.

Recordings from a baby monitor.

Isabel had installed a small camera in the hallway to watch Mateo during his first few months.

No one had remembered that device.

The recording from that night appeared.

First, Isabel.

Walking through the hallway.

Then Victoria.

Alejandro stopped breathing.

There was no audio during the first few seconds.

But an argument could clearly be seen.

Isabel was holding up a document.

Victoria was trying to take it from her.

Then the sound came on.

“How long have you been doing this?”

It was Isabel’s voice.

Victoria, standing in front of the computer, began to cry.

In the recording, she answered:

“I can explain.”

Isabel shouted:

“You’re stealing from my husband!”

Alejandro looked at Victoria.

“Stealing from me?”

The video continued.

They weren’t talking about an affair.

They were talking about money.

At the time, Victoria worked as an outside consultant for one of Alejandro’s companies.

She had used digital signatures and fake invoices to siphon off small amounts of money for almost two years.

Nearly seven hundred thousand euros.

“You were going to report me,” Victoria whispered.

On the recording, Isabel answered:

“Tomorrow.”

Victoria began begging her.

Isabel headed toward the staircase.

Victoria followed.

The camera didn’t directly capture the next section.

Only shadows.

Voices.

A scream.

Then silence.

Alejandro closed his eyes.

“Did you push her?”

Victoria shook her head violently.

“No.”

“Answer me!”

“I didn’t mean to!”

Elena held Mateo tightly.

Victoria collapsed.

She claimed she had grabbed Isabel’s arm to stop her from going downstairs.

Isabel tried to pull away.

The bracelet broke.

Victoria lost her balance.

Isabel fell.

“It was an accident.”

Alejandro looked at her through tears.

“Then why did you lie?”

Victoria didn’t answer.

Because that was where the real difference lay.

An accident could have been explained.

She could have asked for help.

She could have called immediately.

But Victoria did something else.

She shut down the main camera system.

She gathered the documents.

She hid the baby monitor memory card.

And she claimed that she had found Isabel after the fall.

“You left her there.”

Victoria began sobbing.

“I was scared.”

Alejandro slammed his palm against the table.

“She was my wife!”

Mateo started crying again.

Alejandro stopped.

The sound of his baby broke him.

Isabel had died when Mateo was barely two months old.

Victoria had stayed close throughout the entire year that followed.

She had comforted Alejandro.

She had held the baby.

She had said hundreds of times:

“Isabel would have wanted you to move on.”

And four months earlier, Alejandro had started a relationship with her.

The betrayal was almost impossible to comprehend.

“Why did you attack Elena today?”

Victoria remained silent.

Elena answered.

Because Victoria had seen her find the memory card.

She tried to take it away from her.

Elena picked up Mateo and ran downstairs.

Victoria shut off the cameras again.

Then she packed Elena’s bag.

“She wanted to make it look like I was running away with the baby.”

Alejandro looked at her.

“Why?”

Elena answered:

“Because if I disappeared looking like a kidnapper, no one would believe anything I said.”

Victoria raised her head.

“I just needed time.”

Alejandro felt sick.

A year earlier, Victoria had needed “time.”

Isabel died.

Now she needed “time” again.

And Elena had ended up bleeding on the floor.

But one question was still unanswered.

“Why did you keep the bracelet?”

Victoria looked at the object in Alejandro’s hand.

And her answer was worse than anyone expected.

“Because Isabel hid something inside it.”

PART 3: WHAT ISABEL LEFT FOR HER SON

Alejandro examined the bracelet.

One of the small links was thicker than the others.

He opened it.

Inside was a tiny metal piece.

A memory device.

Isabel had suspected Victoria long before that night.

She had saved copies of financial records.

Transfers.

Emails.

Invoices.

And a letter.

Addressed to Alejandro.

It took him several minutes to open it.

“If you’re reading this, I probably never got the chance to explain it to you myself.”

Alejandro began to cry.

Isabel wrote that she didn’t know how far Victoria would go to protect her fraud.

That was why she had made copies.

But the final part wasn’t about money.

It was about Mateo.

“If anything ever happens to me, promise me one thing: don’t let our son grow up believing fear should make his decisions for him.”

Alejandro had to stop reading.

Elena stepped closer.

Mateo had calmed down.

Alejandro gently touched his son’s head.

Victoria was arrested that same afternoon.

The investigation that followed confirmed the fraud.

It also confirmed that she had manipulated evidence connected to Isabel’s death and concealed evidence.

The courts would have to determine exactly what responsibility she bore for the fall.

But one thing became clear.

Victoria had lied for a year.

Elena was completely cleared.

Alejandro wanted to compensate her financially.

At first, she refused.

“I only did what I had to do.”

“You protected my son.”

Elena smiled.

“That was my job.”

Alejandro shook his head.

“No. Risking your life for him wasn’t in any contract.”

Elena eventually accepted help to finish her education.

But she continued working with Mateo.

Not because she had to.

Because she loved him.

The following months were difficult.

Alejandro had to mourn Isabel for a second time.

The first time, he had mourned an accident.

Now he was mourning the truth.

One morning, he visited her grave.

He brought the repaired bracelet.

“I’m sorry.”

He stayed there for almost an hour.

“I should have asked more questions.”

The wind moved through the leaves.

Alejandro placed the bracelet beside the flowers.

Then he changed his mind.

He picked it back up.

“No.”

He smiled through his tears.

“This is for Mateo.”

Years later, when Mateo turned eighteen, Alejandro gave him a small box.

Inside was the bracelet.

And Isabel’s letter.

Mateo already knew the story.

They had never hidden it from him.

But reading his mother’s words was different.

He cried.

“She wrote this for me?”

“For both of us.”

Mateo held the bracelet.

“And Elena found it?”

Alejandro smiled.

“Elena found the truth.”

By then, Elena was no longer a nanny.

She had studied pediatric nursing.

She was still part of their lives.

Mateo called her whenever he had problems.

She still called him “my little tornado,” even though he was taller than she was.

Victoria spent years facing the consequences of her choices.

She never entered that house again.

Alejandro never saw her personally again either.

Not because he wanted revenge.

Because he had learned something from Isabel.

Not every door has to remain open to prove that you’ve forgiven someone.

Some doors are closed to protect what remains.

Isabel’s old bedroom was finally cleared out.

Not to erase her.

Alejandro turned part of the space into a small library for Mateo.

On one shelf, he placed a photograph.

Isabel holding her baby.

Smiling.

Without fear.

One afternoon, Elena walked in and stopped to look at the picture.

“He looks so much like her.”

Alejandro looked at Mateo playing in the garden.

“Yes.”

Then he looked at Elena.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For not running away that day.”

Elena smiled.

“I almost did.”

Alejandro looked surprised.

“Really?”

“I was terrified.”

“Then why did you stay?”

Elena looked toward Mateo.

“Because he couldn’t run by himself.”

Alejandro lowered his head and smiled.

Everything had begun with an accusation:

“She tried to take your son.”

For a few seconds, Alejandro had seen Elena as a threat.

But the real threat had been sitting at his table for months.

Walking into his home.

Smiling at his son.

And telling him he needed to leave the past behind.

Elena wasn’t trying to take Mateo away.

She was trying to get him out of the only place where she already knew he was in danger.

And that broken bracelet beside the staircase hadn’t simply been a lost piece of jewelry.

May you like

It had waited an entire year to tell the story Isabel never got to finish.

THE END.
